Developing elite athletic talent

Wellington, the home of the Hurricanes and the Wellington Phoenix, is also home to one of the largest athletics clubs in the country. Wellington Scottish Athletics Club (WSAC), will be hosting the ever popular Wellington 10,000m Championships in Newtown Park on Saturday 10 November. A long time supporter of elite athletics, and experienced runner himself, our own Carl Hastings is supporting the upcoming meet.

The Wellington event is aiming to get a full New Zealand team to the World Cross Country in Denmark next year. It’s hoped there will be a team full of Wellingtonians! The WSAC is doing all it can to get good pacing and big packs together to make the selection races as competitive as possible.

Newtown Park hasn’t seen world championship qualifying race times since the 1990s. Local runners Nick Horspool, Niam Macdonald and Dan Jones will be trying their luck at running sub 30 minutes. Other top Kiwi runners confirmed include Oska Baynes and Jacob Priddey. Hamish Carson (Rio 2016 Olympic athlete and WSAC member) will pace the race.

Sub 30 minutes is the qualification mark for the World Cross Country in Denmark, with juniors needing to chase 32.05 while women runners need a sub 35 qualifying time.

The Agency Group will provide a financial contribution for administration of the event and a pot of $500 for those that achieve a World Cross Country qualifying time. It’s a good start to help these talented athletes get to Denmark if they’re selected to represent NZ.

Join us supporting these talented athletes on Saturday 10 November!
